Yām through the eyes of sculptors, painters, and craftsmen across the ages
A cylinder seal from Mari with a divine scene of order and chaos — A cylinder seal found in Mari on the middle Euphrates, dates 2340–2159 BC. El holds a scepter (which characterizes him as the king of gods) and is enthroned on a mountain that reaches the sky (as attested by the stars near it). From both sides of the mountain, rivers flow out of two animal protomes (in Ugarit, El is described dwelling in mbk nhrm qrb apq thmtm – "the springs of the Double-Rivers, Amidst the channels of the Double-Deeps" (translation: Mark S. Smith, The Ugaritic Baal Cycle vol. 1, Brill, 1994, p. 218) ). Two tree-goddesses are standing by his sides, emerging from the river; one holds a tree, the other holds a vessel. Another god, of the type of Baal-Hadad, fights the flood (interpreted as Yam, god of the and the rivers, of Leviathan- ltn , his servant) with a spear. The water, that allows the trees to grow, can also be threatening and destructive. This copy of the impression of the seal was made by pencils. (פעמי-עליון, CC BY-SA 4.0)
